An American Original - Robert S. Sleicher, 1927-2017

"Artists toil, move on, and are no more. But their works remain, enriching the world."-SAA

A supremely accomplished and nationally recognized wildlife and landscape artist for 7 decades, Robert "Bob" Sleicher  achieved unique acclaim, respect and admiration.  Recipient of 55 prestigious awards, his art  is destined to stand the test of time.   Whether it be Colorado’s spectacular San Juan Rockies or Cranberry Lake in the heart of the great and historic Adirondacks of New York State, or the rugged beauty of the coast of Maine, Bob knew the contours of earth’s great landscapes.  His senses were sharp. He was a keen observer of nature’s displays as evidenced in his many paintings, which brought joy to multitudes, as did an invite and stay  at  his Cranberry Lake camps.  Jackson Pollack once remarked, “Every good painter paints what he is.”  Thus let it be said, how true, Cranberry Lake and Bob Sleicher, as it should be.  May Bob continue to listen in to the haunting call of the iconic common loon emanating from his dearly loved "Forever Wild" country and may his star brightly burn forever.  Bob will be missed, but his art, appreciated far and wide, most certainly will endure.

Robert S. Sleicher Biography

By William Repp

Discovery, Truth, Impact

Robert Sleicher paints to achieve great visual force – paintings of truth.  His art is studiously planned, the mood natural, and real and consequently very powerful.  His works burst with discovery, and the more you study them, the more they reveal.  As one writer noted, “This discovery, strain, seen in all of his paintings, is so rare that only the true sportsman and lover of the wilderness can ever know and feel it.

Bob has traveled throughout the West – in Taos, New Mexico and Santa Fe, painting the Sangre De Christo Mountains.  He attended with Harry Goulding (“Gouldings Trading Post” in Monument Valley, Utah) an invitation to attend the filming of “The Searchers” with John Wayne, Ward Bond, and Natalie Wood in this Navajo Country.

Bob has prospected for gold, traveled the Green and Colorado Rivers by raft, painted in Cripple Creek and the Pike’s Peak area of Colorado, as well as Granite Peak, and Crow Reservation in Montana; roamed though Wyoming, and journeyed through Jackson Hole country as far as the Rio Grande in Texas.   “One of my favorite places, “he says “is around the Yellow Stone and Musselshell Rivers.  This is the Mountain Man country of long ago.”

Bob is a “Mountain Man” in his own right.  His camp at Cranberry Lake lies deep within the “Forever Wild” country and the vast and lonely Adirondacks.  There are no autos, telephones, or electricity-only the   stark, wild, rugged peacefulness that comes from a mountain cabin.  Hedgehog, Indian Mountain and Darning Needle Ponds, Joe Indian Island, Chair Rock Creek are only a few of the areas familiar to him since boyhood.

“I prefer to do paintings that are dramatic through color and present a realistic element of life and the wilderness, whether it be a deer leaping though the mist of the northern forests or a mountain man crossing Beartooth Pass in Montana.  I always do fiull landscape backgrounds that one is left with the total visual impact of the painting.”

Bob has painted many of the covers for the award-winning magazine New York State Conservationist, Yankee, and other outdoor publications.  He has exhibited shows at Boston, Providence, New York, Washington, Buffalo, Palm Beach, San Francisco, New Orleans, Chicago, St. Louis, and Dallas.  His paintings, including 38 limited edition prints, are in more than 400 permanent public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.  Besides 55 prestigious awards, his artwork is in all 50 states and 14 foreign countries.

Over the years, he received 54 awards, including two gold medals, in competitions throughout the United States and 13 foreign countries. His works reflected his love of the outdoors and wildlife. He painted many covers for the award-winning magazine NYS Conservationist, Yankee, and other outdoor publications. His art was studiously planned, the mood natural, and consequently very powerful. Robert’s art was inspired by his love of hunting, fishing, and canoeing—and he traveled extensively throughout the western U.S. He particularly loved the area around the Yellowstone and Musselshell Rivers—the “mountain man” country of long ago.
